Blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer has identified a new scam exploiting Google’s ad network to target cryptocurrency users. The malicious campaign, discovered by Scam Sniffer analysts, involves deceptive ads that redirect users to a fraudulent website mimicking the popular Pudgy Penguins NFT collection.
According to Scam Sniffer, the ads use suspicious JavaScript code to identify if the viewer has a cryptocurrency wallet. If a wallet is detected, users are redirected to a counterfeit Pudgy Penguins website. Once on the fake site, victims are at risk of having their personal information stolen or being tricked into connecting their wallets, potentially allowing scammers to withdraw funds without authorization.
Although the current scam specifically targets Pudgy Penguins users, Scam Sniffer warns that the technique could easily be adapted to other crypto projects. The firm urges investors to be vigilant, emphasizing the importance of verifying website URLs before engaging with any crypto platform.
To avoid falling victim to such scams, Scam Sniffer recommends: Using ad blockers to limit exposure to malicious ads, Considering a dedicated browser for Web3 activities, and Double-checking URLs before connecting a wallet to any website.
This incident is part of a growing trend where bad actors exploit Google Ads to deceive crypto users. Previous scams have involved fake ads mimicking the Revoke Cash recovery service and fraudulent versions of the Whales Market crypto platform. In these cases, unsuspecting users were redirected to counterfeit sites where their wallets were compromised.
The ongoing use of Google Ads as a tool for crypto scams highlights the need for heightened awareness and robust security measures among cryptocurrency users.
